The author’s text

E G White compiled Night Fighter Navigator from his two flying log books and from notes made just after the war, originally for his grandchildren and godsons. The text on this site is his, as printed, apart from the correction of transcription errors introduced when the printed book was scanned for the first online edition in 2007, and of a handful of small slips of spelling and punctuation. Nothing has been added to, cut from or rephrased in his chapters, and the log book entries are reproduced as he transcribed them.

Everything set in the serif reading face, including the photographs and their captions and the numbered notes at the foot of some chapters, is the author’s own.

Editorial additions

Beneath each chapter there is a section headed Editor’s notes, set in a different, sans-serif face on a shaded panel. These were added in 2026 and are not part of the original text. They give background on the units, aircraft, equipment and operations the author mentions, so that a reader who did not live through those years can follow them. Each note names the Wikipedia article it draws on; the wording is a summary of those articles and no claim in the notes goes beyond them.

The aircraft photographs in the notes come from Wikimedia Commons, where they are in the public domain or released under a Creative Commons licence, and each carries its credit. The maps were drawn for this edition from the memoir’s own place names and log book positions, on public-domain Natural Earth coastlines.

The glossary explains the abbreviations and slang of the wartime RAF that the author uses without comment.

The site

The first online edition was made in 2007 by the author’s grandson. This edition, prepared in 2026, keeps the same text and photographs in a new setting designed to be read comfortably on any screen, and to be found by anyone searching for the people, places and squadrons it describes.
